About Notary Fees in the U.S.

How State Fee Caps Work

Most states set a maximum fee a notary may charge per notarial act. This cap covers the notary's official service — signing, stamping, and recording the act in their journal. Notaries can charge less than the cap but not more.

About 15 states have no statutory maximum. In those states, fees are market-rate and typically range from $5–$25 per act depending on local demand.

What's Not Included in the Cap

Mobile Travel Fee
When a notary travels to you, they may charge a separate travel fee. This is not regulated in any state. Typical range: $25–$150+.
Loan Signing Agent
Mortgage closings involve 50–150+ signatures. Signing agents charge a flat package fee ($75–$200+), not per-signature.
After-Hours / Rush
Evening, weekend, or same-day appointments typically add 25–75% to the base fee. Not regulated.
Remote Online (RON)
Online notarization platforms (Notarize, PandaDoc Notary) charge $25–$50 per session, regardless of state fee caps.

Common Documents & Typical Signature Counts

Power of Attorney
1–2 notarizations. Most states require a single acknowledgment. Some require witness signatures too.
Real Estate Deed
1–4 notarizations (grantor, grantee). Full mortgage closings: 50–150+ pages with loan signing agent.
Affidavit / Sworn Statement
1 notarization (jurat). The notary witnesses the signing and administers an oath.
Vehicle Title Transfer
1–2 notarizations. Required in most states for private-party vehicle sales.
Will / Trust
1–3 notarizations. Requirements vary significantly by state. Always confirm with an attorney.
Travel Consent Letter
1 notarization. Required when a minor travels internationally with one parent.

Online Notarization (RON) — Is It Right for You?

Remote Online Notarization (RON) is now legal in 42+ states. Platforms like Notarize and PandaDoc Notary let you get documents notarized via video call in minutes, 24/7. Typical cost: $25–$50 per session. RON is ideal for:

Documents you can upload as a PDF  •  Out-of-state signers  •  Urgent same-day needs  •  Documents that don't require physical presence by law

RON is NOT accepted for some real estate transactions and state-specific documents. Always verify first.
